MIT vs. BU

Our new home

Well, as promised, I have our new apartment pics ready and waiting.

But first, a little update.

For the past few weeks, we have been doing all sorts of things and have been having a blast.  Well, more me than Paul because he has to go to school.  I will not be starting until the end of August because it is financially a better decision.  I would only be able to take one class, which doesn't take away anything from my back to back always here mode that I will be doing once I start (I'll have to do every summer term).  So, it's just better to enjoy the summer while I can.

For Boston being such an expensive city (every city is expensive), I sure can find a lot of free things to do.  Free yoga and cardio exercise, free outside movie showings, and so much more!  I love it.  It even has a beach and a few girls and I went there this past week.  Even though it was slightly crowded, it was nice to go and the water was so cold, but enjoyable compared to that awful 100 degree weather we had going on.  I had not forgotten that in the north we do not have AC, but I just forgot how miserable it was.  Oh well, it's a beautiful 70 something today :).  I love northern summers.

Paul and I also got to eat at the North End, which is the Italian neighborhood.  We went to a place called Tratorria and it was fantastic.  And the best part WE CAN WALK TO THE NORTH END BECAUSE WE ARE SO CLOSE!  No need to worry about where to park the car or paying to be in a lot.  Just go.  It's an awesome lifestyle.

Other adventures: bachelorette party for three girls who are getting married this summer (in MIT program), seeing a corpse flower blossom, and getting caught in a deluge on a historic tour.  The pictures tell all, but we're so happy to be here.

2 weeks past

I cannot believe we have been here for two weeks.  Paul and I are in a whirlwind of excitement and fun, so it seems difficult to find the time to update.  We love being here and cannot seem to get enough of our fun new life.  Anyway, to the update.

One of the fun new things we did was go to the Chinese Dragon Boat Racing Festival.  Basically, it's people who row on the Charles River and race.  We did this with a few of the MIT students and we enjoyed it immensely.  Not too many pictures with us, but here's a couple to give you an idea.

Paul has started taking his real classes and I think he is really enjoying it.  He comes home and reads constantly, working to finish his homework.  These students may work hard, but I think they work harder at play.

I have really enjoyed getting to know these students.  Their significant others or SOs as we are called are really sweet and kind and are so interested to get to know everyone.  I suppose since everyone is new and mostly do not know anyone else up here, we all bond together.  Although this being alone up here feeling has not been true for Paul and myself.  We know quite a few people from before.  Nicole Kraieski from my year in high school is up here, a few Georgia Tech folk, and many others have been so welcoming that we haven't been lonely since we've been here.

I also love where we live.  Our apartment is teeny, but we have the best location.  We are next to the Common and to the Charles River Esplanade where we run.  I can do free yoga classes on Tuesdays at 6.  On Friday, we walked to the North End and got some amazing Italian food, and then went to Free Friday night Flicks at the Hatch shell...which is just a short jaunt from where we live (we saw Happy Feet 2).  On Fridays, I go to the Haymarket and get my cheap produce ($13 for the week!).  Seriously, I love walking everywhere and doing everything.

Yesterday, we did our Sunday sailing crash course....literally, crash.  We were instructed on how to sail, how to do the rigging, then put on the river.  It was intense and stressful because not only did we not remember how to sail (since that's all short term memory and they taught us rigging just before), but we also had to avoid 20 other boats filled with novices...not a treat.  We did okay, except when it came to docking, in which we did a terrifying 360 in the water...BUT WE DIDN'T CAPSIZE!  That's the victory in this.  We also crashed into another boat, but that was because we were switching roles.  My legs I guess were real cramped because they are killing me today.  Ugh.

But the real big news is this last one...I GOT INTO BOSTON UNIVERSITY!  I am officially off the waiting list and can now become a speech pathologist.  I am so excited about this new chapter in my life.  I was going to do a beautiful post with a picture of me in my new school, but I haven't had the chance.  Oh well.  I just needed to tell everyone of my exciting news.  I LOVE BOSTON!  I will start my summer session after July 4th and will tell all about my courses here.  Yay!  I am so happy.

Well, it's been wicked crazy, but hopefully I will get our apartment pictures done soon.  I am redoing a coffee table, so I'm waiting 'cause it looks wicked ugly.  See ya!

Reopening day!

Hello everyone!!! Wow, two years ago Paul and I went on our crazy adventure to Sydney and never thought something neat like that would happen again. I guess we were wrong. While Boston is not Sydney, it certainly is a change of life nonetheless. It's crazy to think that this is happening. We are so excited about the next two years...it's always a two year process huh? Anyway, at first, I was reticent about taking up the blog again. I mean, it's Boston...does it really merit blogging? It's not another country and we won't be going on trips every weekend like in Australia. But after this weekend and seeing all the awesomeness that Boston has to offer, I figured, why not? It'll be easy to keep everyone up to date on our lives and gives Paul an excuse to show off his pictures. We do plan on traveling a lot because this part of the country is new to us. Although I grew up in NY, I haven't seen too much of the North it seems. I guess I grow verbose, so let us share with you the move!! On May 29, Paul and I set off in our Budget moving truck after selling both our cars (can I say how upset I was about selling my precious car?) with Buncombe in tow and headed to Charlotte for the final farewells to our parents. I thought it was quite appropriate that we left on our 9 year dating anniversary. We are so cute!

We traveled through North Carolina, Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York and ended in Connecticutt for the night on May 30. It was not a bad drive and we even had great company with Buncombe, who braved to come out every once in a while :)

The next day was the rough one. We made it to Boston and moved in that day. Driving through Boston is the worst, but moving into a Beacon Hill apartment is exhausting. We hired three guys to help move our stuff...up four flights of stairs. No, we don't have an elevator. Paul and I are going to be super fit. It only took a couple of hours but it was probably the best money ever spent because of how terrible it was trying to get stuff up those stairs! Here's the embodiment of those few hours:

Disgusting. Despite that, Boston has been great! Currently it is cold and overcast with loads of rain, but hopefully it will clear up soon and we can experience our summer and play on our rooftop terrace. The benefit of going up four flights of stairs is having the roof easily accessible. The new banner pic is from the rooftop and it is just as beautiful as it depicts. Here's a few pics of us enjoying the roof.

We have been doing some small stuff, and when the apartment is more together, we will post those pictures. Paul is on his second day of classes and really is enjoying it. Mainly, it's about getting to know each other, so no stress yet. As for me, I am working on putting the apartment together and trying to find jobs.
Well, this turned out to be a larger post than I originally intended, but I hope you liked it. Tune in for new updates in our new adventure up north!
