Poas and Irazu Volcanos

Good morning to all those nearest and dearest!

This weekend, we took it easy and decided to take a couple of day trips to the neighboring volcanos.  It is incredible how many volcanos there are in Costa Rica...also how close they are to San Jose.  They aren't that active, but still, makes you ponder.

Irazu

Irazu wasn't much to write home about, but it's a very tall volcano.  So tall that we were a little breathless at points.  Maybe this will prepare us for Machu Picchu.

Fun fact: The last time Irazu was emitting ash and fumaroles was when JFK visited Costa Rica.

On to Poas!

This volcano was a little bit more exciting, since it is more active.

I'm sorry...is there a dinosaur in your volcano?

We got up to the volcano right as it opened at 8 AM and found it cloudy!  But then, in an instant, the smoke cleared and revealed the wonder below.

Poas is the busiest national park in Costa Rica, so it wasn't long before our tranquil moment was disturbed.  At least there were some great trails around and we saw some flowers and wildlife.

It is incredibly difficult to snag a picture of these guys.  Kudos to Paul.

Extinct crater with very little wildlife in it, due to the remnants of sulfur.

We took this weekend just to relax a little and explore a little of San Jose.  Next post, I will show you our new digs and how awesome it is.  Have a great day!
